Vincent Herring and Eric Alexander Performance and Masterclass
April 11 @ 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm
PM Woodwind is thrilled to welcome, for the first time, saxophone greats Vincent Herring and Eric Alexander for a Performance and Masterclass.
Saxophonist Vincent Herring’s intense, soulful, multi-noted style and ebullient swing have excited audiences worldwide. Vincent started playing saxophone at the age of 11 in school bands and studying privately at Dean Frederick’s School of Music in Vallejo, CA. At the age of 16, Herring was studying at California State University at Chico on a music scholarship.
Vincent moved to New York City in early 1980’s attending Long Island University. He first toured in the United States and Europe as part of the Lionel Hampton Big Band. With his sound strongly influenced by Julian “Cannonball” Adderley,
Saxophonist Eric Alexander is also an accomplished composer and educator. Having placed second at the 1991 Thelonious Monk International Jazz Saxophone Competition behind Joshua Redman and ahead of Chris Potter and Tim Warfield, he was soon signed by a record label and has since recorded over 20 albums as a leader and over 300 as a sideman.
Alexander has worked with many jazz musicians, including Chicago pianist Harold Mabern, bassist Ron Carter, drummer Idris Muhammad, and guitarist Pat Martino. He is part of Mike LeDonne’s Groover Quartet with Peter Bernstein, and Joe Farnsworth. He has recorded and toured extensively with the sextet, One for All, and The Battle with Vincent Herring.
“When you get to the level that Vincent and the musicians we’re playing with are at,” Alexander says, “assessing their worth compared to one another is absolutely subjective. . Personally, I just try to keep the bar high, and when you play with somebody like Vincent, the bar is way up there.”“We have great rapport with each other,” Herring adds. “Eric is an amazing virtuoso and a master of melody. He’s very humble, but he is an exceptional musician, without a doubt. Playing with him is always inspirational for me.”
Vincent and Eric will be joined by Chicago musicians Dennis Carroll on bass, George Fludas on drums, and Jeremy Kahn on piano.
